About the Course

Conducted over seven one-hour weekly sessions, the course provides a clear sequence of instruction for practice. The full technique is explained and practiced step by step over the seven sessions. The format is relaxed and there will be ample opportunity for clarifying any questions about the practice and its use in everyday life. Providing regular practice opportunities, this course is aimed at aiding students in developing a regular personal meditation practice.

To support your meditation practice, wear comfortable clothing and preferably eat only a light meal before class. You may wish to bring pen and paper to take notes.
NB: Even though

this course is based on the ancient Tibetan Buddhist technique of Shamatha meditation and the classes are conducted at the Jamchen Buddhist Centre, this is a secular course - no commitment to Buddhism is necessary or expected.

About Calm Abiding Meditation

Calm Abiding Meditation increases mindfulness - being present moment by moment with a non-judgmental awareness and acceptance. Evidence indicates that mindfulness supports our minds to be relaxed, focused and peaceful, improving health, enabling recovery from stress and anxiety. Calm Abiding meditation brings a clearer perspective on life and awakens happiness.

This form of meditation is a training for the mind. It strengthens the meditator’s awareness and skill in observing thoughts, increasing awareness of the intrinsic stillness within, and opening up greater choice about how and what we communicate. It is radical, challenging and stimulating means of learning new ways to relate to self, others and the world. Our course is based on the ancient Tibetan Buddhist technique of Calm Abiding (Shamatha) meditation. It is an excellent technique for calming a busy mind.
