Dharma Class Etiquette
Dharma Class Etiquette
| *The following are some common sense guidelines and general suggestions regarding etiquette when attending teachings in Buddhist Centers. This conduct is mainly aimed at showing respect for the Buddhist teachings being presented, and to engender mindfulness, self-discipline amd mutual respect while you participate as a group in formal teachings and practices. * Try and arrive 10 minutes early for teachings, and use that time to get settled down and focus your mind on the teachings you are about to receive. Some individuals might like to read some of the teaching materials, relax, or meditate, *Do not disrupt or disturb others who might already be meditating, or are focused on preparing themselves for the teachings. *Wear clean clothes and appropriate dress (for both men and women). * Shoes should be left outside the shrine room. * Feet should not be pointed towards the teacher or the altar. * Dharma text and practice books should not be placed on the floor. You should also not "step over" dharma objects or texts. * As a matter of respect and Buddhist custom It is a common courtesy to stand when the teacher enters the shrine room, and remain standing while the teacher performs prostrations. Performing prostrations yourself is optional however. Depending on the student and the circumstances the student might make prostrations to the alter or statue(s) representing Buddha, or to the teacher * Under normal circumstances, try and remain for the whole class (or practice) as a matter of respect and as a Buddhist custom. If you know in advance that you are unable to attend the whole class or practice, then we encourage you not to attend that particular session, or speak to the teacher in advance to see what is appropriate * During the teaching try not to be disruptive to the event, and do not disturb or distract other students. Most students will be focused on the teachings or on participating in the meditation or sadhana practices being conducted, and participants should keep in mind the interest of the group and other participants. * Please turn off any mobile phones or other electronic devices, so they don’t activate during the class |
