Public Talk
‘Challenges and Promises of a Secular Buddhism’
The teachings and principles of Buddhism inspire many. Yet many in contemporary society find Buddhism too idealistic and too reliant on monasticism, which has its stigma. In recent years, HH the Dalai Lama has even discouraged people from changing their religion to Buddhism. This talk will canvas the challenges and promises of a new Buddhist approach which could give rise to a more secular form of Buddhism.

Saturday Teaching and Empowerment
‘The Role of Wealth in Buddhist Practices’ - with a Yellow Jambala empowerment
Do Buddhist monks and nuns take vows of poverty? No, they don't. They vow to live on alms. Why are many monasteries filled with so much riches? Why are lay people encouraged to practice dana (giving)? Is money root of all evil? Or is it result of good karma or a cause of creating more good karma? Wealth is so necessary in life, but why is it treated as a poison? Many Buddhist sutras and texts have lot to say about the sins of money and wealth. Lama Choedak Rinpoche will offer a thought provoking discourse on this topic followed by a Jambala empowerment. This will offer a positive surprise to remedy the effect of the fear of the economic downturn etc.
Saturday 21 August, 9.30am – 12pm, 2pm - 5pm
Venue 69 Yerrin Street, Balwyn, VIC 3103
Tickets $60 ($50 Jamchen members and concession card holders)
Sunday Teaching and Empowerment
‘The Wisdom of Emptiness’ – with a Goddess Prajna Paramita empowerment
The realization of the emptiness of self is considered as the highest point of Buddhist wisdom. In theory, Buddhist students spent years discussing and debating this important topic. Isn't emptiness negation of the conventional reality? Even if one knows conceptually what emptiness is about, how does one actually practice emptiness in every day life. Why is emptiness so hard to apply into practice when it should be so much easier for those who understand it? Lama Choedak Rinpoche will disclose pith instruction of the teachings of emptiness with warmth and humour followed by an empowerment and Sadhana of the White Goddess Prajna Paramita.
Sunday 22 August, 9.30am – 12pm, 2pm - 5pm
Venue 69 Yerrin Street, Balwyn, VIC 3103
Tickets $60 ($50 Jamchen members and concession card holders)
