Hi Jamyang

welcome to the forums...

you have done well to post on first visit.. site is new and will grow with members.

Keep calling back and viewing the different posts etc... you can always check out the "view posts since last visit button" to get an update.... this is at the very top of the forum homepage.

We will be arranging an online discussion group and invite all to join in... I have yet to set a day and time for that.

Just play around on the site... you cannot do much harm and everyone here is new as well

Hope to see you online soon.. oh yeah there will also be forum newsletters sent out to all members

Hi Everyone Smiley

Looking forward to having a look around the forum.  I look forward to learning and probably asking many questions!!  I've been studying Buddhism "informally" for many years, and recently decided to take refuge during a Medicine Buddha Retreat in SIBA in Gippsland.  I'm extremely excited about following the Dharma path and look forward to meeting others on the Path.

Yours in the Dharma

Hi Neil

Thank you for the warm welcome.  I believe we have met at Jamchen a few weeks earlier, during Lama Choedak's teachings.  Yeshi is my Dharma name.  You may know me as Maria :-)

Hi everyone,
 My name is Andrew.
I have also been informally been trying to make my understanding of Buddhism an active part of my life, but with limited success until recently.
I have been associated with Tara House years ago- but got too swept up with work, and found the traveling too much.
I live locally in Surrey Hills and was pleased to find Jamchen so close.
I work as a GP- so the dharma, and suffering are often on my mind.
I have found a lot of value in the online talks of a Vipassana teacher called Gil Fronsdal, on audiodharma.org
I am currently especially interested in extending the use of mindfulness techniques to what we call mental illnesses.
I will be hoping to be a regular visitor at Jamchen after Christmas- especially with a view to extending my mindfulness and meditiation practices.

andrew,

i might have some helpful information on that topic.

richard davidson (psychologist/psychiatrist ?) at an American university has extensively dealt with some of those types of topics, and has an interesting lecture (available online) that deals with this area which you might be interested in (more stress and anxiety related, then true "mental illness" iirc).  the outpatient clinic at their teaching hospital also made some non-denominational self help programs based on Buddhist meditation techniques  (book, tapes) which have been show to have a measurable benefit for patients with some of those issues within a couple of months of applying them (? reduced stress levels and improved well being iirc), without the patients needing to be confronted with the mental hurdle of dealing with "the Buddhist religion".

there is also an annual conference in the last 10 yrs which brings together scientists from various disciplines who have an interest in Buddhism (under the auspices of the dalai lama), and is aimed at  improving scientific validation of Buddhist related concepts. some of their participants might also have developed other programs like the one i mentioned above.

if i see you at one of the jamchen events i'll try and give you more information on this, it gets a bit lengthy to do in writing with forum posts.
